Softball Ends in Heartbreak in Series Finale at WNMU - St. Mary's University Athletics (2024)

SILVER CITY, N.M. — The St. Mary's University Softball team suffered heartbreak in the finale at Western New Mexico as they lost 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Mustangs (5-5, 2-1 Lone Star Conference) scored four runs in the seventh to walk off the contest after the Rattlers (6-9, 1-2 Lone Star) led the majority of the contest.

Both sophom*ores Abigail Dela Rosa (La Grange, Texas) and Raegan Tennill (Corpus Christi, Texas) had two base knocks and scored twice on getaway day, while senior Reba Reyes (Brownsville, Texas) drove in two.

With one out Dela Rosa beat out a bunt for a single in the top of the first inning. Tennill doubled to right-center to score Dela Rosa and she came around to score on a single to deep right-center by Holder for the 2-0 lead.

With two outs in the bottom of the first, Dela Rosa made a terrific diving catch down the right field line to preserve the three-up, three-down inning for Abrego. The Mustangs knotted the score with two runs on three hits and an error in the bottom of the second inning.

The offense went right back to work as Dela Rosa singled to the pitcher and she stole second. Holder walked with one out and with two outs, Reyes blistered a double down the left field line to push the Rattlers lead back to two, 4-2.

In the fifth, Tennill legged out an infield single to shortstop, moved to second on a walk to Holder and scored two batters later when Gomez singled up the middle for the 5-2 advantage.

With one out in the seventh, the Mustangs hit back-to-back singles and moved to second and third on a groundout back to Abrego. Ana Armijo hit a home run to right field to knot the score at 5-5 and WNMU won three batters later on a single to right center.

The Rattlers don't get much rest as they host Texas A&M Kingsville for a three-game series beginning on Tuesday. The teams will play at doubleheader on Tuesday beginning at 4 p.m. and conclude the series at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
