Cal Poly Football Announces Staffing Changes for 2024 - Cal Poly (2024)

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — With Spring football on the horizon, second-year head coach Paul Wulff is excited to announce a few coaching hirings and internal changes as his squad begins preparing for the 2024 season.

Cal Poly Football Announces Staffing Changes for 2024 - Cal Poly (1)Timm Rosenbach joins the Cal Poly coaching staff as the Wide Receivers Coach and co-Offensive Coordinator after spending the last decade mainly between positions at UNLV and Big Sky rival Montana. Rosenbach and head coach Paul Wulff had a deep-rooted personal history that goes back to their playing days together at Eastern Washington where Wulff, as a center, snapped for the legendary Eagles Quarterback. Since parting ways after college, the two have remained close friends, and were even each other's Best Man at their respective weddings.

A Senior Offensive Analyst and Director of High School Relations at Montana, Rosenbach brings heaps of experience to a staff that will appreciate his offensive and recruiting prowess. With his help, Montana remained one of the FCS's best programs, finishing the last three seasons (barring COVID) ranked in the top-15 of FCS.

"Timm brings a tremendous amount of competitive fire and vast knowledge of offense," Wulff said of Rosenbach. "He has over 40 years of football experience and has been highly successful everywhere he's been. We know each other well, we know what we expect so there's a great working relationship so I feel very fortunate to have him on board and he's going to be very valuable for our overall team."

Joey Muscarella returns to the Cal Poly sidelines after a brief stint as Offensive Analyst at Arizona State. Coming back as a Mustang for the second time, Muscarella spent 2020-22 in an Offensive Quality Control and Special Teams Analyst role before taking the opportunity to work for a renowned FBS program. Muscarella will now be a Tight Ends Coach and help with special teams at Cal Poly.Cal Poly Football Announces Staffing Changes for 2024 - Cal Poly (2)

"Joey brings tremendous energy, effort, and passion for the game," Wulff said of Muscarella. "His effort towards the players he coaches is top notch and I'm very excited to watch him work with our tight ends and special teams."

An incredibly experienced and accomplished trainer, Darin Lovat joins Cal Poly as its Head Strength and Conditioning Coach. Lovat has decades of work at both the Division I and II levels. Most recently the Director of Athletic Performance for Olympic Sports at Memphis. Going on his 13th season as a strength and conditioning coach at the Division I level, Lovat is certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (C.S.C.S.) and the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (S.C.C.C.).

Lovat spent over a decade with Washington State after working with Boston College as the Eagles' Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach in 2007-08. From 2002-07 Lovat served as the head strength and conditioning coach at Eastern Washington University, and spent time at UCLA from 1999-2002 as the assistant strength and conditioning coach, serving as the top assistant for the football program. He oversaw all aspects of the training programs for 10 nationally competitive Division I teams, two of which won NCAA titles.

"He comes at a time that is needed for this youthful football team and us taking that next step. Me seeing what he can do first hand excites me for what the future of Cal Poly football will look like."

Cal Poly also made some movements within its own staff, including a few promotions. Former NFL draftee and Cal Poly football legend Asa Jackson will be working with his third positional group after becoming the Running Backs Coach. Quarterbacks Coach in 2023-24 Erik Meyer, also a very successful QB at Eastern Washington, will retain his previous position on top of sharing co-Offensive Coordinator duties with Rosenbach. Everette Thompson also moves to become the Assistant Offensive Line Coach on top of Special Teams duties.

On the defensive side of the ball, Cody Von Appen has been retained and will become Cal Poly's sole Defensive Coordinator for 2024. Defensive Line coach Will Plemons will remain in his position while also tackling the incredibly important job of Assistant Head Coach to Paul Wulff. Finally, Josh Letuligasenoa moves into the second level of the defense from Defensive Line Coach to Outside Linebackers Coach.

As Cal Poly quickly approaches Spring Ball in April, the Mustangs will continue improving on and off the field as they look to turn their fortunes around after one of the more promising offseasons of recruiting and coaching hires.
