NEW ORLEANS – Tulane redshirt junior guard Chiara Grattini has been selected to take part in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) "So You Want to Be a Coach" program. Grattini is one of 55 players that was selected nationwide in the 21st class of the program.
Each student-athlete will participate in the two-day workshop on April 4 and 5 during the WBCA Convention in Cleveland, Ohio. "So" participants will learn about the administrative side of coaching, recruiting, how to get hired, skill development, the importance of knowing the rules, and how to balance work and life.
"I am very excited for all our players like Chiara who are interested in coaching," Tulane head women's basketball coach Lisa Stockton explained. "It can be such a rewarding profession. And the 'So You Want to Be a Coach' program is a great introduction. The best advice that I can give to her or any of our players who want to pursue coaching is to find the right level where you can feel you make an impact and share your passion for the game."
Grattini has logged 56 games in her Tulane with six starts. She has had a breakout senior campaign with career-highs of 15 points against Howard, five rebounds against South Florida, eight assists and four steals against Charlotte. She has made the first six starts of her career and has a career-high 28 field goals, 16 made threes, 38 rebounds, 48 assists, 18 steals and 80 points in her final season on campus.
"I obviously didn't start playing basketball with the idea of becoming a coach although my father has been a coach since he was eighteen," Grattini explained. "So, I definitely pictured that the sport would be a part of my future. I like the idea of continuing to give back to what basketball has taught me throughout my years playing. I want to help teach the next generation what basketball can be. Through coaching I want to have a positive impact on the younger generation. I always say that basketball is the best training for everyday life. I think there is much more I can give back to this sport once I am done playing and coaching is probably the easiest way to do so."
The 'So' program increases the understanding and application of skills necessary to secure coaching positions in women's basketball, increases the understanding and awareness of competencies necessary for success in coaching, introduces female basketball players to coaches and administrators, and raises awareness of the existing talent pool of female basketball players who have a passion and interest in coaching the game of women's basketball.
"The WBCA community of coaches each year invests in young, aspiring coaches through the 'So You Want To Be A Coach Program", said WBCA Executive Director Danielle Donehew "We have high expectations of these graduating student-athletes and the future contributions they will make to the game of women's basketball.
Qualified candidates must have exhausted their final year of basketball eligibility at a four-year institution or have graduated within the past year and must be nominated by their WBCA-member head coach. Each participant is selected based on her academics, contributions to women's basketball on and off the court, professional resume, and have a written recommendation from their head coach.
Next, Tulane wraps up the Florida road trip taking on South Florida on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Tampa.
